30 million years ago, an eruption in this location formed a caldera. The caldera collapsed, kicking up volcanic ash and dust hundreds of feet high. That ash and dust settled into rock (rhyolite duff). Then, a half million years ago, basalt flows (liquid rock!) from nearby eruptions, covered the older tuff.
